Sony Biotechnology Inc.'s New Technology for Science Provides Researchers Results in Color

05/17/2013

CHAMPAIGN, Ill., May 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Biotechnology Inc. ("Sony") today announced the launch of the new Sony SP6800 Spectral Analyzer (SP6800).  Sony will be exhibiting and taking orders for this system at CYTO 2013, which will be held at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California, from May 20 - 22.

The SP6800 Spectral Analyzer is Sony's second analytical system, incorporating commercial audio-visual technologies into new and novel functionalities for the immunology, oncology, and other areas of cell research.  This system includes the compact Spectral Analyzer, a free-standing fluidics cart, and Microsoft® Windows® 8, 64-bit supported software.

Developed in conjunction with its affiliate, Sony Corporation in Japan, the system provides up to 15-color analyses with only 2 lasers and no filters, and also is able to collect a sample's full emitted fluorescence spectrum, from 500nm to 800nm, in a novel 32-channel linear array PMT detector.  With this new functionality, the SP6800 Spectral Analyzer has the ability to determine the spectral profile of a cell's autofluorescence and then automatically remove it from a stained sample, thus improving signal-to-noise and data accuracy.  Combing the 32-channel linear PMT and new "virtual filters" feature, the SP6800 delivers the capability to fine-tune the detection system to adjust for staining inadequacies as well as marker density challenges.

Another unique function, adapted from DVD and Blu-ray laser tracking technology, offers the researcher distinctive information for each sample component (i.e. cell or event) by determining its location within the flow cell.  This, in turn, can then be used in analysis to decrease variability and improve coefficients of variations for the total sample or individual populations needed for some applications, e.g. Cell Cycle Analysis.

"After working with collaborators throughout the world, we are excited to see such positive results from complex applications, like 12-color hematopoietic cell transplantation chimerism analysis, 11-color lymphocyte lymph-node replacement kinetics, and 7-color pediatric leukemia signal transduction," says Dr. Allen Poirson, CEO of Sony Biotechnology Inc.  "The SP6800 provides fundamentally new technology for science, especially in the areas of autofluorescence and event location analysis, giving researchers their results in color."
