SONY PICTURES CLASSICS WINS IN VENICE

09/12/2021

NEW YORK (September 12, 2021) – Sony Pictures Classics wins at the Venice Film Festival. Their film PARALLEL MOTHERS opened the Italian film festival to a 9-minute standing ovation and much critical acclaim and closed the festival yesterday with leading actress Penélope Cruz winning the Best Actress Award.

Written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, PARALLEL MOTHERS follows two women, Janis and Ana, as they coincide in a hospital room where they are going to give birth. Both are single and became pregnant by accident. Janis, middle-aged, doesn’t regret it and she is exultant. The other, Ana, an adolescent, is scared, repentant and traumatized. Janis tries to encourage her while they move like sleepwalkers along the hospital corridors. The few words they exchange in these hours will create a very close link between the two, which by chance develops and complicates, and changes their lives in a decisive way.

In addition to Cruz, the film also stars Aitana Sánchez Gijón, Milena Smit, Israel Elejalde, Julieta Serrano and Rossy de Palma.

PARALLEL MOTHERS will have its US premiere as Closing Night Selection at the New York Film Festival. Sony Pictures Classics will release the film on December 24, 2021.
