"Freedom: Songs From The Heart of America" is a new 3-CD box set which will be the musical companion to the upcoming TV series "Freedom: A History of US," which premieres on PBS in January 2003. Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings have mined their rich archive of recordings to prepare a unique, collectible box set that features music which addresses the struggle for freedom in America. The 3-CD, 67-song package arrives in stores December 10, 2002.

"Freedom: Songs From The Heart of America" will feature a combination of songs that appear in the "Freedom" PBS series plus additional songs inspired by the narrative of the series. Included are tracks covering virtually every important historical event in American history -- from the Revolutionary War through the challenges we face in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11th. The selection of blues, folk, country, jazz, folk, gospel and rock songs are performed by such artists as Louis Armstrong, Leonard Bernstein, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Woody & Arlo Guthrie, Billie Holiday, Mahalia Jackson, Leadbelly, Keb' Mo', Willie Nelson, Pete Seeger, Simon & Garfunkel, Sly & The Family Stone, Nina Simone, Kate Smith, Bruce Springsteen, and many more. In addition, the package will include a booklet featuring rare photos and historical essays.

The 3-CD "Freedom: Songs From The Heart of America" box set is inspired by the "Freedom: The History of US" book series by award-winning author Joy Hakim. Hakim also contributes an essay to the CD box set.

"Freedom: A History of US" will run 8 hours and will air in January on PBS affiliates throughout the country. President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush provide an on-camera introduction to the series, and celebrities adding voiceover narration include Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, Christopher Reeve, Reese Witherspoon, Susan Sarandon, Michael Douglas, Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, and numerous others.
