Columbia/Legacy Recordings, WFUV-FM Radio, Hal Willner and Janine Nichols have announced plans for "The Rose & the Briar: The Floor Show" event, at the Ethical Culture Society Auditorium (corner of 64th Street and Central Park West) in New York City on Monday, December 6th, at 7:30pm. The show will be an evocation of the themes explored in the book and CD of the same name, edited by Greil Marcus and Sean Wilentz and released by W.W. Norton & Company and Columbia/Legacy, respectively.
The evening-length program will be a lively mix of music and spoken word. Reading from their essays will be Sarah Vowell, John Rockwell, Paul Berman, Joyce Carol Oates, and Luc Sante, and musical performers will include Laurie Anderson, Bob Neuwirth, Rosanne Cash, Jay Farrar, Terre Roche, Shannon McNally, Jenni Muldaur and Rodney Crowell.
The book is a contemplation by nearly two dozen of the greatest writers, critics, and artists in the country on the power and meaning of American ballads, from "Barbary Allen" through to Springsteen's "Nebraska." Editors Wilentz and Marcus also helped to select recordings for an accompanying CD, released on Columbia/Legacy, including vintage rarities, classic compositions by Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton, and Randy Newman, along with specially commissioned recordings by John Mellencamp, Snakefarm, and the Handsome Family.
In their preface, the editors explain that they imagined the book as a stage upon which contributors could sing their hearts out. The CD is conceived as another version of that show, and the live performance ("The Floor Show") another version still.
The performance will be recorded by WFUV-FM, a listener-supported radio outlet championing alternative music in New York City. A suggested donation of $5 will be requested at the door.
