The world-renowned top designer, director and photographer Thierry Mugler will work as creative advisor and costume designer for Beyonce on the international superstar's upcoming world tour slated to open in Canada in March 2009.
In his role as creative advisor on the tour, Mugler -- who worked as a professional dancer with France's Opera National du Rhin Ballet and studied drama at Paris's Cours Florent -- will give his creative input on the production's mise-en-scene, set design, lighting and choreography.
Mugler -- who transformed the worlds of haute couture and pret-a-porter with the avant-garde designs of the fashion label that bears his name -- will serve as costume creator for Beyonce's new production, designing approximately 58 costumes for the show including the star's outfits as well as those of her band, back-up singers and dancers.
Mugler -- whose previous theatrical collaborations have included Cirque du Soleil's show "Zumanity" and George Michael's "Too Funky" video -- will direct key sections of Beyonce's production including "Dangerously In Love," "Ave Maria" and the show's finale.
A long-time and enthusiastic fan of Mugler's work, Beyonce became interested in collaborating with the top designer after seeing his seminal pieces first-hand at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute's "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy" exhibit in New York in May 2008. After subsequently studying the historical works in the Thierry Mugler archives in Paris, Beyonce selected the Mugler-designed clothing pieces, including an outfit from the "Too Funky" video, which may be seen in the photo packaging for I AM...SASHA FIERCE, her latest international #1 chart-topping album. A #1 best-seller in the United States and Japan, I AM...SASHA FIERCE features the singles "If I Were A Boy" (#1 UK airplay/singles, #1 Norway singles, #1 Sweden singles, #1 South Africa airplay, #1 Korea airplay, #1 Brazil airplay and #1 Denmark digital singles) and "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)," which hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 & R&B charts best-selling album and has spent three weeks at #1 on Germany's airplay-based club charts.
Beyonce's new concert production promises to showcase the music and film superstar, along with her extraordinary all-female band, performing musical hits, classics, and surprises in a newly-created high-tech state-of-the-art concert environment.
Beyonce's upcoming world tour will mark the artist's first full-length concerts since 2007's sold-out "The Beyonce Experience" and the debut live performances of songs from I AM...SASHA FIERCE.
