First, Dr. Oz - who provided counsel to Nate in late November during a bout of appendicitis - receives a surprise visit from "patient" Nate during "The Dr. Oz Show: Dr. Oz's Surprise Party," airing on Valentine's Day, Monday February 14. Unbeknownst to the doctor, the executive producers invited Nate for a follow-up on his appendicitis and surgery to serve as a medical assistant. Dr. Oz, Nate and the audience "Assistant of the Day" donned purple gloves to demonstrate with a real appendix the causes, symptoms and prevention of this painful inflammation. This was the first time Dr. Oz had seen his friend Nate and given him medical advice since his emergency appendectomy in November.
Then, on Tuesday, February 22, Dr. Oz surprises Nate's studio audience with an unannounced visit to "The Nate Berkus Show."
"I actually didn't know what appendicitis was," said Nate. "I called Dr. Oz while he was on vacation in Cairo back in November and I told him I can't stand up, something's wrong with my stomach. He told me 'You have appendicitis' and advised me to go straight to the hospital and that's exactly what it was. So I came to personally thank him for his help."
"To have Nate not only come on the show but to share his experience and give us an update about his condition was great for our audience," Dr. Oz said. "I hope that I'm as good a decorating assistant on his show as he was a medical assistant on mine."
Also as part of "The Dr. Oz Show: Dr. Oz's Surprise Party" episode, Dr. Oz's children Daphne, Arabella, Zoe and Oliver surprise their father to reveal the surprising things you never knew about Dr. Oz to his viewers. Then, comedian Judy Gold and Z100 radio host Carolina Bermudez surprise Dr. Oz's biggest fans to be part of Dr. Oz's countdown to the top 5 surprising things you can do to live longer in under a minute. He also discloses the surprising ways to break through your weight loss plateau, tries out a surprise dance workout with Stepp Stewart and surprises the entire studio audience with a special treat of massages after the taping.
