NEW YORK, May 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- America's Doctor, Dr. Mehmet Oz, two-time Emmy® Award-winning host of the Emmy® Award-winning, nationally syndicated The Dr. Oz Show will give the city of Philadelphia a "15 Minute Physical" in partnership with Temple University Health System, Alere Inc. and Practice Fusion Inc. on May 19 at Temple University's Health Science Campus. Fox 29, the local home of The Dr. Oz Show, (weekdays at 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM), will award five lucky viewers the opportunity to have an in-person consultation with Dr. Oz on that day.
(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110909/LA65382LOGO)
The "15 Minute Physical" is a quick series of screening tests which include a lipid panel (HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglycerides), and blood glucose made possible on the Cholestech LDX, a rapidly reading mobile lab device contributed by Alere. In addition to the blood test on the LDX, registrants will have their blood pressure and waist size measured. By linking these five important markers, a very basic idea of general risk for heart disease and diabetes can be determined. Upon learning the results, a short counseling discussion with Temple University Health System volunteer staff will advise participants whether they are in optimum health, should address any of the conditions, or follow up with their primary care physician. By providing quick, basic information to people, life threatening chronic disease can be stopped in its tracks, which is what the "15 Minute Physical" event hopes to accomplish.
As the estimated 1,000 registrants are being tested, Practice Fusion, an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) company, will be performing data analytics in real time to determine averages, trends and other significant data points for the random sample of people. Aggregating this information will provide a good indication of the urgency to focus on prevention in various areas to prevent the common major killers, heart disease and diabetes.
"We teach a lifestyle of prevention on The Dr. Oz Show," said Mehmet Oz, M.D., host. "We are showing Philadelphia the problems that you can discover in just 15 minutes. Avoiding the consequences of high blood pressure and cholesterol are equally simple and can save lives, but it starts with awareness. While some cities do better than others, the average blood pressure, cholesterol level and waist size in this country are not optimal, in fact it's dangerous. This is what we will demonstrate on May 19 and show Philadelphians what they can do about it."
Temple will host the event in the Medical Education and Research Building at Temple University School of Medicine, located at 3500 N. Broad Street on the Temple Health Sciences Campus. As a longstanding provider of world-class healthcare to patients throughout the Philadelphia region, Temple is the perfect institution for the Dr. Oz Show to partner with in teaching disease prevention to patients, at the neighborhood level.
"We are thrilled that The Dr. Oz Show is engaging the North Philadelphia community and we are happy to host the '15 Minute Physical,'" said Larry Kaiser, M.D., President, Temple Health System. "As a regional provider of the full spectrum of health services and specialties, we know that many Philadelphia residents are looking for ways to take what they learn on television from Dr. Oz each afternoon and put it into action in their own lives. Temple is the perfect place to build that bridge."
Registration opened Monday April 30 and will provide appointments to the first 1,000 people. After capacity is reached, a waiting list will be maintained for first come, first serve registrants. Those who successfully register must RSVP to a notification e-mail and will be given an appointment time. No unregistered walk-ons will be accepted for testing on May 19. In order to register, people should go to www.doctoroz.com.
