NEW YORK, Jan. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Classical congratulates its Best Original Score nominees for the 85th annual Academy Awards:  Mychael Danna for Life of Pi, Thomas Newman for Skyfall and John Williams for Lincoln.  Mychael Danna also garnered a second nomination for Best Original Song with "Pi's Lullaby," featuring lyrics by Bombay Jayashri, from Life of Pi.  The Academy Awards® will be broadcast live on February 24, 2013 on ABC.

In the Life of Pi film score, first time Oscar® nominee Mychael Danna's sensitive composition and innovative choice of instruments reflect the international character as well as the religious and philosophical aspects of the film.  In the composer's words, the music "guides viewers by means of emotions through the film." Danna's thoughtful instrumentation lends structure to the movie.  He also co-wrote the film's Oscar® nominated original song "Pi's Lullaby" with Indian vocalist Bombay Jayashri, who performs the song in her native Tamil language.

Skyfall represents composer Thomas Newman's eleventh Academy Award® nomination.  His uniquely expressive musical style fits perfectly with the humor and slickness of a Bond movie.  Newman's expressive range goes from thunderous and dramatic for the many action sequences to broodingly atmospheric.  With its big orchestral effects, his music is equal to the spectacular events that the movie portrays.

The score for Lincoln is the latest collaboration of John Williams' historic 40-year relationship with Stephen Spielberg. It is his forty-eighth Academy Award® nomination (he's won five) and makes him the Academy's most nominated living person, exceeded only by Walt Disney.  No one is better suited than Williams to provide a score for a film that depicts such momentous and historic events and his full orchestral range can be heard throughout the score.
