Sony Online Entertainment And Daum Communications Announce Planetside®2 Coming To South Korea

11/07/2013

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) today announced a new partnership with Daum Communications (Daum), South Korea's leading publisher, to bring the award-winning massively multiplayer online first-person shooter (MMOFPS) PlanetSide®2 to the country. To kick off this new partnership, SOE and Daum will showcase PlanetSide 2 at the G-STAR Global Game Exhibition in Busan, Korea on November 14-16, 2013.

Daum will hold exclusive PlanetSide 2 publishing rights, including dedicated servers, local customer support and payment gateways for South Korea. PlanetSide 2 will launch in the games-savvy Asian country as a free-to-play game, granting players access to PlanetSide 2 free of charge so they can choose to play by their preferences.

"Players have been engrossed in battle for nearly a year on a global scale. During that time, PlanetSide 2 has proven itself ideal for South Korea based on gaming's massive popularity and penetration throughout the region's culture," said Louis Figueroa, Senior Vice President, Business Development, Sony Online Entertainment. "A game on the scale of PlanetSide 2 requires an engaged and equally massive community. Daum's track record in the space made them an ideal partner, and we are confident this will lead to a highly successful launch and ongoing support in South Korea."

PlanetSide 2 has been a highly successful MMOFPS since its launch in late 2012. The game, which was developed using SOE's state of the art next generation MMO engine, ForgeLight™, delivers unprecedented sci-fi realism with massive battles featuring thousands of players engaged in combat for their factions.

"PlanetSide 2 is a groundbreaking MMOFPS, and its competitive nature is a perfect fit for the South Korean audience," said Sean Hong, Leader of Game Division, Daum Communications. "The constantly evolving battlescapes and state-of-the-art visuals allow for a sense of scale not offered by any other games on the market."

About PlanetSide 2
PlanetSide 2 takes all the groundbreaking features from the original game – massive multiplayer battles, distinct empires to rally around, and enormous continents where intense ground and air combat unfold – and adds features that modern gamers have come to expect of the FPS and MMO genres. With advanced technology, years of gamer feedback, and a new SOE proprietary MMO game engine called ForgeLight, PlanetSide 2 offers a truly competitive and visceral FPS experience with massive warfare, massive customization and massive community.

Across the continents of Auraxis, thousands of players will come together in enormous battles to win control of critical territories and key resources for their empire. With an extensive skill tree and free-form class-based system, players will be able to customize their soldier, weapons and vehicles to match their play-style, as well as the needs of their squad, outfit or empire. Battles can last for days or weeks, so players will need to build alliances and specialized combat outfits to take on long-term strategic and tactical initiatives. With aircraft and ground vehicles, as well as infantry combat, the battles will be larger and more intense than ever before.
