10/23/2014
CULVER CITY, Calif., Oct. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Sony Movie Channel gives thanks for our men and women in uniform this November, dedicating its "Mandays," "The Recline," and "Friday Features" blocks to critically acclaimed war films, military classics, and modern favorites. The month-long tribute is highlighted by the 2nd Annual "21 Film Salute Marathon," as SMC honors Veterans Day with a two-day event starting Saturday, November 8 at 5:20 a.m. ET, through Sunday, November 9. The lineup includes James Caan and Anjelica Huston in GARDENS OF STONE; Ronald and Nancy Reagan in HELLCATS OF THE NAVY; espionage thriller THE BAMBOO PRISON; Robert Mitchum brings one of WW2's toughest battles to life in ANZIO; Anthony Quinn leads the LOST COMMAND; action icon Jean-Claude Van Damme in SECOND IN COMMAND and THE SHEPHERD; Oscar®-winning documentary THE FOG OF WAR; and Denzel Washington in the military murder mystery A SOLDIER'S STORY; among others.
The month is headlined by a special presentation of the 1982 miniseries THE BLUE AND THE GRAY, airing in its entirety on Thanksgiving Day at 8 p.m. ET. John Hammond stars in this sweeping epic that explores America in the days before and during the Civil War, as a young newspaper correspondent who witnesses such major historical events as First Bull Run, the Battle of Gettysburg, and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Stacy Keach, Lloyd Bridges, and Gregory Peck also star.
SMC pays tribute to the incomparable Humphrey Bogart, in two of his most iconic war films, as part of the "Bogart At His Best" double feature on Wednesday, November 26, at 8 p.m. ET. The night begins with Bogart as battle-hardened tank captain Joe Gunn charged with guiding a rag-tag troop on a perilous trek through a war-torn Libyan desert in SAHARA. Then, Bogart stars as the troubled Commander Queeg, facing court martial in the acclaimed naval drama THE CAINE MUTINY, with Fred MacMurray.
And "Sundays in HD" puts the spotlight on five military masterpieces, every week at 7 p.m. ET. Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara cuts through THE FOG OF WAR, in Errol Morris' Oscar-winning documentary (November 2); a Vietnamese man searches for his American father in THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY (November 9), with Nick Nolte and Tim Roth; a young boy finds HOPE AND GLORY in WW2-era London (November 16); Matthew Modine and Nicolas Cage deal with life after the Vietnam War in BIRDY (November 23); and Denzel Washington is a WW2 vet-turned-private eye searching for a missing woman in DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS (November 30).
