NEW YORK, Dec. 21, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As millions of people start the new year determined to shed unwanted pounds and improve their health, the three-time Emmy® Award-winning The Dr. Oz Show is helping ring in 2016 with "The Day Off Diet" – a superb new strategy for weight loss based on the best practices and principles of past season's successful plans and new element: the day off!

The Dr. Oz Show.

Also for the first time, The Dr. Oz Show conducted a national viewers poll to generate feedback on dieters' biggest obstacles.  Issues such as the perception that dieting would be difficult, lonely and induce cravings lead the conclusions which then heavily weighed into both the creation and presentation of the curriculum. Camaraderie, support and social structure also appeared to be a key facet in success which drove the creation of a Facebook support link that can be accessed through doctoroz.com. The Day Off Diet premieres January 4 and will be revisited in episodes throughout January. Printable guides, recipes, food lists and planning tools for the Day Off Diet are available on doctoroz.com.

"Most people are not first time dieters, and despite the success of past plans, the belief by a majority of viewers that dieting was a long, hard and lonely road was something we needed to take into account," said Mehmet Oz, M.D. host. "In addition to the sound nutrition advice, the mindset of a day off as well as its pay off in pounds lost is something that worked very well for viewers when we had our audience try it."

This diet was designed to stack the odds in the participant's favor. When viewers think about starting a diet, the assumption is that it means forsaking ALL the fattening foods we love. It means no sweets, no cream sauces, no chips, and no wine! However, the Day Off Diet operates on the premise that anyone can follow a restrictive diet for a short time but sooner or later we will give in and binge on the foods we've been denying ourselves. Therefore good adherence to a nutritional plan that does not result in weight gain combined with a day to indulge appears to have better long term results and more weight loss.

Essentials of "The Day Off Diet" include SIX DAYS a week of dieting with a researched and tested plan designed for rapid weight loss. Then, for 1 DAY a week the participant eats whatever they want and calls it an OFF DAY. With an off day each week, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. In principle, it's easy to comply with a plan that only asks someone to restrict their calorie intake for 6 days at a time.

The Day Off Diet allows viewers have their cake & eat it too (literally) -- as long as you "cheat" the sensible way, one day a week. To make sure the "day off" concept is successful, the plan suggests mapping out important events for the month and circling the one day each week you want to make an "off day" (ie: your birthday=off day). Also, it is suggested that participants take a "before" picture at the start of their diet and then document progress at regular intervals of improvement as motivation.
