This diet was designed to stack the odds in the participant's favor. When viewers think about starting a diet, the assumption is that it means forsaking ALL the fattening foods we love. It means no sweets, no cream sauces, no chips, and no wine! However, the Day Off Diet operates on the premise that anyone can follow a restrictive diet for a short time but sooner or later we will give in and binge on the foods we've been denying ourselves. Therefore good adherence to a nutritional plan that does not result in weight gain combined with a day to indulge appears to have better long term results and more weight loss.

Essentials of "The Day Off Diet" include SIX DAYS a week of dieting with a researched and tested plan designed for rapid weight loss. Then, for 1 DAY a week the participant eats whatever they want and calls it an OFF DAY. With an off day each week, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. In principle, it's easy to comply with a plan that only asks someone to restrict their calorie intake for 6 days at a time.

The Day Off Diet allows viewers have their cake & eat it too (literally) -- as long as you "cheat" the sensible way, one day a week. To make sure the "day off" concept is successful, the plan suggests mapping out important events for the month and circling the one day each week you want to make an "off day" (ie: your birthday=off day).
